My 2024 Favorite Things: A Year of Creativity, Growth, and Joy

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the little joys and habits that shaped 2024. From artistic pursuits to daily routines, below is a glimpse into my favorite things that brought inspiration, nourishment, and growth this year. The lists are not in any particular order of importance.

WATCHING

  • Chef’s Table – This series remains a feast for the eyes and soul, celebrating culinary artistry in the most inspiring ways.

  • Great British Baking Show – A delightful reminder that creativity and kindness can coexist, even in competition. The holiday episodes have been quiet calming at the end of long days this past month.

  • One Day – Proof that meaningful storytelling and humor can be woven seamlessly into one unforgettable series.

  • Shrinking – A heartfelt and humorous exploration of grief, healing, and the messy beauty of human relationships. I must add that season 1 was far superior to season 2.

READING

  • The Berry Pickers, Amanda Peters – A poignant tale that celebrates family, culture, and the enduring connection to nature.

  • Go As a River, Shelley Read – This beautifully written novel explores resilience and growth in the face of profound loss.

  • The Women, Kristin Hannah – A powerful story of strength and friendship set against the backdrop of history.

  • The Other Wes Moore, Wes Moore – A thought-provoking exploration of choices, opportunity, and the lives we shape.

WRITING

This year, I blogged 57 times for Carrot Top Studio—the most I’ve ever written in 20 years of business! Each post deepened my connection to the work and stories I love sharing.

Spolier alert … I think there will be an expanded version of this habit in 2025!

ART SUPPLY

Faber-Castell Polychrome Colored Pencils became my trusty companions this year. Their rich colors and smooth blending brought endless joy to my sketches and designs.

LISTENING

  • Artists for Joy – A podcast that continually reminds me of the transformative power of creativity.

  • Modern Love – Heartfelt, raw, and utterly relatable stories that resonate deeply (most of them!)

  • Abiding Together – This faith-centered podcast provided moments of reflection and spiritual growth.

EATING

I made a commitment to up my vegetable intake, ensuring something green at every meal. Fresh spinach in yogurt and granola for breakfast? Surprisingly delicious and now a staple!

CREATING

I challenged myself to create one digital drawing a day, and the habit has been transformative. It’s amazing how small daily practices fuel big creative growth. I share daily on this blog. If you look, remember it’s practice not perfection!

EXERCISE

This year, I added pushups to my morning routine—right after talking to God, brushing my teeth, and washing my face. I let my body decide how many I do, and it’s a small but empowering ritual.
