Advent Devotionals: New and Cherished Resources for Deepening the Season

As Advent approaches, I’m gathering resources that bring depth, reflection, and fresh inspiration to my personal journey through this sacred season. This year, I’ve chosen a few new devotional companions, alongside beloved favorites, to help guide my heart and mind in anticipation of Christmas.

Encountering Emmanuel is one of the Advent resources recommended by Jenny Gallo of Carrot Top Studio (makes of unique artistic hand crafted advent stoles)

One new addition is Encountering Emmanuel by Heather Khym.

This book resonates with the themes of presence and promise central to Advent. Khym’s reflections offer a gentle but profound encouragement to pause and experience God with us—Emmanuel. Each day provides room for prayer and connection, making it ideal for a reflective and intimate approach to Advent.

Also new to me this year is Light From Afar: An Advent Devotional from Around the World by Upper Room Books.

This unique devotional brings in perspectives from Christian communities across the globe, which is both refreshing and grounding. It’s a beautiful reminder of the universal anticipation and celebration of Christ’s coming. Each daily reading connects our personal journey with the collective hope and joy experienced worldwide, bridging our hearts with believers near and far.

Returning to my Advent routine are two incredible online art devotionals: Biola University’s Advent Project, produced by the Center for Christianity, Culture, and the Arts, and The Visual Commentary on Scripture by King’s College London. These resources bring scripture to life through art, music, and reflections, creating an immersive devotional experience. The Advent Project from Biola includes daily art, music, and poetry that explore the themes of Advent in thought-provoking ways. Meanwhile, The Visual Commentary on Scripture offers a rich tapestry of visual interpretations that deepen my understanding of scripture passages. Both offer unique, artistic insights that amplify the beauty and mystery of the season.

Engaging with these resources throughout Advent allows me to approach Christmas with a heart full of wonder, perspective, and gratitude.

I hope these tools also inspire you, whether you’re exploring Advent devotionals for the first time or looking for something new. May this season be one of spiritual depth and joy for each of us as we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth.
