Do-nut Worry

Often, maybe most often, art percolates from personal experience. An artist’s soul , joy, trials and passion translates through into their work. The “Donut Worry” sticker stems from a life long love of donuts and yes, my life long trying to get a grasp on this scripture -

This is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, not about your body and what you are to wear. Surely life is more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? (Matthew 6:25-26)

On the day the “Donut Worry” stickers arrived from the printer, my morning reading from Seasons of Your Heart by Macrina Wiederkehr was titled, “The Sacrament of Letting Go.” Within her devotional she shares the following poem.

Slowly
She celebrated the sacrament of
Letting Go…
First she surrendered her Green
Then the Orange, yellow, and Red…
Finally she let go of her Brown…
Shedding her last leaf
She stood empty and silent, stripped bare
Leaning against the sky she began her vigil of trust…
Shedding her last leaf
She watched its journey to the ground…
She stood in silence,
Wearing the color of emptiness
Her branches wondering:
How do you give shade, with so much gone?
And then, the sacrament of waiting began
The sunrise and sunset watched with
Tenderness, clothing her with silhouettes
They kept her hope alive.
They helped her understand that
her vulnerability
her dependence and need
her emptiness
her readiness to receive
were giving her a new kind of beauty.
Every morning and every evening she stood in silence and celebrated
the sacrament of waiting.
— Macrina Wiederkehr

The tree in this poem is a meaningful for me. I won’t ever look at a tree in the same way again. And while I continue work on myself I hope the '‘donut worry, be happy” sticker is a fun reminder for us all!
