A Journey Through My Favorite Journals and Sketchbooks

In the realm of creativity, there are few things as vital as a trusty journal or sketchbook.

These tangible companions hold the power to capture fleeting ideas, preserve precious memories, and unlock the depths of our imagination. As an avid artist and writer, I have had the pleasure of exploring various journals and sketchbooks throughout my creative journey. In this blog post, I will share with you some of my all-time favorites, each with its unique qualities and charm.

First the Moleskine Classics: No discussion about journals and sketchbooks can begin without mentioning the Moleskine Classic Notebook. Renowned for its timeless design, quality paper, and sturdy construction, Moleskines have become a staple among artists and writers. Smooth, acid-free pages provide the perfect canvas for both writing and sketching, while the pocket at the back adds a practical touch. I use several different styles-

  • Moleskine Cahier Journal, Soft Cover, Large (5" x 8.25") Ruled/Lined, Black, 80 Pages is what I write business notes in. The dimensions work well on a desktop and the slim profile makes it easy to through in a tote.

  • Moleskine Art Watercolor Album, Hard Cover, Pocket (3.5" x 5.5") Plain/Blank, Black, 60 Pages are lovely for painting while on the go. I pair it with my favorite watercolors and pens referenced in this blog post. (pictured above)

Hard Cover, Pocket (3.5" x 5.5") Plain/Blank, Black, 60 Pages are what I used on my last trip to Italy. The pages fold out according to style so I used it to tell the story of our trip as our time unfolded. It’s now a lovely memory and reference for future trips to the same area — and certainly better than tchotchke souvenirs!

Strathmore Sketchbooks:

When it comes to sketchbooks, Strathmore is a name that resonates with many artists. With a variety of options catering to different artistic mediums, their sketchbooks offer an excellent surface for pencil, pen, charcoal, or even watercolor. The paper is heavyweight, acid-free, and has a subtle tooth that enhances the texture of your drawings. Whether you're a beginner or a professional artist, Strathmore sketchbooks provide a reliable foundation for your artistic expression. My favorite -

  • Strathmore 469-5 Hardbound Art Journal,128 Pages, 5.5 by 8.5", Toned Tan is a size I am comfortable working in. I love the toned paper to give me a starting point. For some reason, it is more invitational than a white page! Sometimes I work on single pages but I also can span across a two-page spread. The only downside is that it doesn’t open totally flat so I often use bull nose clips to hold the pages open.

Speaking of Strathmore,

the Visual Watercolor Journal is a fantastic choice for artists seeking versatility and durability in a format with a spiral binding so that the pages lay flat. The paper quality is exceptional, with a smooth slight watercolor paper texture that accommodates a wide range of artistic techniques. From graphite sketches to colorful mixed media artworks, This sketchbook can handle it all while preserving the vibrancy and integrity of your creations.

Journals and sketchbooks are not mere stationery items; they hold the power to nurture and inspire our creative journeys. Each possesses unique qualities catering to different creative needs and preferences. Ultimately, finding a journal or sketchbook that resonates with you and encourages you to unleash your imagination onto its pages is key. I’d love to know what you prefer! So, find your perfect creative companion, and let your thoughts and creativity flow freely. Happy journaling and sketching!
